The Engineering Process

Share

An engineering process is an order of operations that engineers typically follow to solve problems. It is highly iterative and some parts of the process could be repeated multiple times in the same project. The steps that are iterated can be described and framed differently.

Research is the first step. This includes identifying needs while locating data and analyzing constraints. It is a crucial part of the engineering process, which allows engineers to determine the most effective solution for a problem.

Once the researchers have gathered enough information and have begun brainstorming solutions to the issue. This can be done a variety of ways and is where engineering creativity really thrives. This is also a stage where the potential solutions are examined and evaluated. This could include modeling studies, generating decision matrixes, and even constructing prototypes to compare.

This involves students choosing the most appealing idea, and developing the plan of its creation. Then, they construct the prototype using the specified materials and then test it against their own performance criteria. Students may have to test their prototype, and possibly revise it to ensure it works as intended.

This is a great method to teach students about the importance of problem solving and iteration. Engineers are known to design a solution then test the solution, then find a new issue. The process continues until the engineer finds a solution which meets their expectations.
